Say goodbye to the physical disc!
You heard that right. Alongside the controversy with Grand Theft Auto VI's case with a code, Sony PlayStation have now announced that come January 2028, they will cease production of discs for all future PlayStation titles. What does that mean for us? Well, discs have been a staple for many gaming collections through consoles reign, even now people would purchase cases from back in the day to fill their collections and to hold that physical disc in hand. There was quite a lot of talk regarding "No longer owning" games bought this way, that a disc within the case meant we have a physical copy of the game that can never be taken away from us, but this unfortunately has not been the case for sometime. Modern games, once you insert the disc, often needs an internet connection to download the game itself. Meaning the disc starts the download, but does not have the storage capacity to hold the entire game, rendering them needless for the game to be downloaded mostly apart from having a unique code to prove its legitimate and not pirated, allowing you access to online servers. Come 2028, the only difference for us is no more physical disc to start that download and the idea of "collecting" the games, becomes more collecting the cases. Hopefully this will not stop production of cases. Both plastic and steel cases alike are highly sort after (I know I have a fair few in my collection), yet it is still upsetting to know that when we open up those cases we will be left with nothing but a flimsy bit of paper with a used code on it. With collectors editions being more scarce, to the possibility of cases being lost, will there be much more to collect physically in the future of gaming?
